Report by Robert Hopkin
The University of Birmingham (UoB) in the form of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) exhibited at Middle East Rail in Dubai during the last week of February – Dr Marcelo Blumenfeld and Robert Hopkin attended from the BCRRE and they we accompanied by Lynne Saint (Business Development Manager for the UoB Dubai Campus).
Although the footfall was slightly less than previous years – due, in the main, to the impact of COVID-19, the UoB team were kept busy throughout the two-day show and strong interest was shown for our capability across the range of our education, research and professional services. Additionally, the team UoB team were joined by Ben Bailey of the UoB Dubai Campus for the UK Reception hosted by Her Majesty’s Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Andrew Jackson, at his official residence. In particular, the raising of the profile for Railway Education in the region was heightened. We look forward to building on these green shoots and setting up a programme of Railway-themed learning activity delivered at the UoB Dubai Campus (with that in mind, look out for the new UoB Dubai Campus for 3000+ students opening its doors in September 2021).
God willing, we will be there for next year’s Middle East Rail which takes place during the Dubai latter half of EXPO 2020 (see www.expo2020dubai.com) and we are looking forward to being in the main Expo structure for this event. Our thanks go to Andrew Blake and Kasia Uszalewska of Intec for whom nothing was too much trouble in the run up to the event; to Neil Walker from RIA for overseeing all the administrative bits and bobs (not least managing all the Brit exhibitors’ applications for Tradeshow Access Programme Grants from the Department for International Trade (DIT)); and, last, but not least, a big thank you to DIT for helping to make the cost of the event close to bearable!
