The Rail Alliance through its programme of Knowledge-Based Collaborations is delighted to be sponsoring the forthcoming Birmingham Centre for Rail Research and Education lecture and Knowledge Transfer Event entitled, "High Speed Rail - The 21st Century Solution?" presented by Professor Andrew McNaughton, Chief Engineer HS2.
Learning outcomes are as follows:
- A greater understanding of the technological and scientific challenges faced by High Speed Rail
- An appreciation of the opportunities available for Research and Development in the High Speed arena
- The selection criteria for the final proposed route as promulgated in the High Speed White Paper
- An appreciation of the political and environmental challenges faced by High Speed Rail,
- An understanding of the logistical implications for operating High Speed Rail in comparison to air and road travel
Attendance at this event is FREE; Rail Alliance staff will be on hand to provide rail sector advice and consultancy services to delegates from 3pm onwards in the Birmingham Centre for Rail Research and Education (BCRRE); a formal welcome and address will be given by Professor Chris Baker at 4.30pm and this will be followed by the HS2 Lecture at 5.00pm.
The closing address and vote of thanks will be given by Associate Professor Felix Schmid, Course Director of the MSc Railway Systems course. Afterwards, there will be a chance for delegates to discuss matters of interest on a 'one-to-one' basis with the Chief Engineer HS2 and other staff of the BCRRE and to discuss the merits in terms of graphical design, communication value and impact of the entries submitted to the University's HS2 Poster Competition.
Moreover, of significant value to attending delegates will be the Rail Alliance-led Networking Session to be held in the BCRRE and this will last through to 9pm and will also enable delegates to interact with BCRRE staff and students.
The event is limited to 102 attendees - so please book early to avoid disappointment; this is an ideal event to update your knowledge of the HS2 project and to meet and network with Rail Alliance members and staff as well as colleagues from the wider rail community.
