Worlifts have supplied and serviced hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical jacking and lifting equipment to a wide range of industry sectors for 30 years. Based at its new premises near Bromsgrove, the company have now established a new rail division focused upon ‘Serving the Railway Infrastructure to include on-site examination and testing of small plant’, assisted by the Rail Business Improvement Programme.
Manufacturing concerns
To provide the proposed new on-site, cost effective, responsive, quality service to the railway maintenance infrastructure, a fully equipped trailer needed to be developed to supplement the existing mobile service vehicles. All on-site examination and testing equipment installed needed to comply with national standards in order to issue appropriate certification for all equipment examined and tested on site.
MAS action
MAS-WM Rail Project Manager – Ron Adams assisted Wor-rail by inviting them to take part in the Rail Improvement Programme.
Worlifts had developed the concept for the Rail specialised equipment and trailer necessary to supplement its existing service vehicles. In conjunction with MAS-WM, Worlifts drew up the range of specialist support needs to implement this key element of their Wor- rail strategy. This support included design and development of the specialised testing units and the trailer that would house these units, to include adherence to rail industry regulations and approvals. The build of the units would primarily be carried out in-house by Worlifts. External support was required for training of the engineers in both the new rail products and the necessary test procedures and for the preparation of training and maintenance manuals, to support in service operation. RNM Consulting, having extensive experience within the rail infrastructure maintenance industry, was selected to work with Worlifts to deliver the project.
Diagnostic
The timing for delivery of this specialised maintenance support service to the rail industry fitted exactly with the rail industry and network rail industry strategies of:
- 7 day working i.e. rapid response and turnaround support, and planned preventative maintenance
- Cost improvements against the background of major infrastructure investment; including on site support with the potential to significantly reduce inventory holdings.
The project provided the specialised rail industry support, via RHM consultants, combined with Wor-lifts broad industry experience to deliver the Wor-rail service.
Results
The trailer and equipment has been produced to an extremely high standard. Engineers have been trained and are now fully competent in all aspects of the examination and testing procedures required for this on-site service, which has already been used for both promotional demonstrations and for the first contracts now placed for this service with Wor-rail. Wor-rail turnover is targeted to increase Worlifts turnover by 15% by the second full year of operation.
"Being able to offer companies on the railway maintenance infrastructure our on-site services as an alternative to sending their small plant off site for statutory examination and testing, enabling reduced down time and costs, is a very exciting prospect for Wor-rail"
John Worley
Managing Director, Wor-rail
"Worlift's recognition of the Rail industries strategic objectives, has delivered a service capable of supporting the improved operational effectiveness and efficiencies demanded"
Ron Adams
Rail Project Manager, MAS-WM
