Press Tools
Core business at Harper and Simmons is Press Tooling. First established in Old Redditch over 60 years ago with 2 partners, the company now employs 14 people and operates from an 18,000ft unit in Redditch New Town, serving Birmingham, the Midlands and Cotswold areas. We have presstool tryout facilities at 200 tonnes, and our toolmakers have over 100 years combined experience on all forms of press tooling including progression, transfer, draw tools and separate op.
Tools are designed on state of the art solid modelling systems which allows shut heights, feed heights, locations and clamping to be verified before metal is cut.
Data from all platforms can be accepted on all media and tools are designed around a customer’s model
We have the capability to handle project work, including assemblies of parts. We also have experience in dealing with Automotive OEMs such as Peugeot, Renault, Honda, Rover as first tier suppliers.
Recent projects completed are Land Rover Defender and Jaguar Diesel clutch covers and internals, produced on 1000T presses. Toyota and Kia door latch plates (tools are run in eastern block). Stainless catalytic converter cans—modular tooling which produces different lengths of can. Black and Decker Jigsaw sole plates, MINI exhaust tail pipe trims (multistage drawn stainless parts), high volume suspension components for Ford Focus, 2 tonne subframe tools for Volvo XC90.
Six Hitachi Q range wire eroders give us a wedm potential of over 1000 hours per week cutting time. This means that nearly everything is wire eroded where possible, enabling exact duplication of parts in the event of tool damage. Our most recent addition is a Hitachi 8Q, possibly the largest machine in the UK. Cutting envelope is 1000 x 800 x 500 coupled with an AC generator, and 45kg despooler, means that large parts can be cut continuously for days on end. Four machines are capable of 1000 x 600 x 500 in a normal setup, and the 6th machine has an AC generator and a smaller bed, for multi pass cutting.
We also have a remote table setup which enables us to carry up to 2 tonnes. This means we can do straight line cuts up to 3m in certain cases, and gives us the facility to split up large rings as used in the turbine industry.
With the support of a fully operational tool room, we can construct our own jigs and fixtures, and modify machine parts to overcome almost any problem.
